Installing a toilet may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a step-by-step approach, you can successfully complete the installation process. This knowledge article will guide you through the installation of a standard floor-mounted toilet.
- New toilet
- Wax ring with sleeve
- Adjustable wrench
- Screwdriver
- Level
- Hacksaw or pipe cutter
- Closet bolts and nuts
- Toilet tank bolts and gaskets
- Plumber's putty or silicone sealant
- Sponge or rag
- Bucket
Step 1: Prepare the Area
- Start by turning off the water supply to the existing toilet. Locate the shut-off valve behind or near the toilet and turn it clockwise to shut off the water.
- Flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl. Use a sponge or rag to remove any remaining water from the tank and bowl. Place the sponge or rag in a bucket.
- Disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the tank. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove the coupling nut that connects the supply line to the fill valve.
Step 2: Remove the Old Toilet
- Remove the nuts securing the toilet to the floor. These nuts are typically found on either side of the base and hold the toilet to the flange. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove the nuts.
- Carefully lift the old toilet off the flange and set it aside. Be cautious as toilets can be heavy and fragile. Place old towels or newspaper on the floor to catch any drips or spills.
Step 3: Prepare the Flange and Install Wax Ring
- Inspect the flange to ensure it is in good condition. If it is damaged or deteriorated, replace it with a new flange.
- Clean the flange and surrounding area to remove any debris or residue. This will ensure a proper seal.
- Install the wax ring onto the flange. The wax ring should have a plastic sleeve that fits into the flange opening.
Step 4: Install the Toilet
- Carefully lower the new toilet onto the flange and align the mounting bolts with the holes in the base of the toilet.
- Press the toilet down firmly to compress the wax ring and create a watertight seal. Ensure that the toilet sits level on the floor.
- Place the washers and nuts onto the mounting bolts and tighten them by hand. Use an adjustable wrench to gently tighten the nuts, alternating between the two sides, until the toilet is secure. Be careful not to overtighten, as it may crack the toilet.
- Trim the excess length of the mounting bolts using a hacksaw or pipe cutter. Leave approximately 1/4 inch (6 mm) of the bolt above the nut.
Step 5: Install the Toilet Tank
- Attach the tank to the bowl using the tank bolts and rubber gaskets. Insert the bolts through the mounting holes on the bottom of the tank, then place the rubber gaskets onto the bolts inside the tank.
- Position the tank onto the bowl, aligning the mounting holes on the tank with the corresponding holes on the bowl.
- Secure the tank to the bowl by tightening the nuts onto the tank bolts. Again, use an adjustable wrench to tighten them, alternating between the two sides, until the tank is secure. Be careful not to overtighten, as it may crack the tank.
Step 6: Connect Water Supply and Test
- Connect the water supply line to the fill valve on the bottom of the tank. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the coupling nut securely.
- Turn on the water supply by opening the shut-off valve fully. Check for any leaks around the connections and the base of the toilet.
- Once you're sure there are no leaks, flush the toilet and observe its proper functioning. Adjust the fill valve or flush mechanism as needed.
And there you have it! You have successfully installed a toilet. Enjoy the convenience of your newly installed fixture.
